Letha
Letha had never felt this tired in all her life. She’d been working two jobs, hers and Isla’s, for the last few weeks. When she had started, it had sounded great to have the extra money, but she didn’t know the toll it would take on her physically. Then throw in the middle of that her heart getting tangled up in her current mess. It crushed her to hear him say he would marry her anyway. How could someone believe that she had such low expectations for her future?
He wasn’t a low candidate, but to marry without love would be horrible. Marrying Rafe and having his love would have been a dream come true, but that isn’t what he offered.
Well, he wasn’t the first, and she wouldn’t marry this one either. She grabbed an apron outside the office door and began tying it on as she walked to the sales counter. Whenever she had a moment to herself that day, his proposal echoed in her thoughts. It grated on her.
After putting in half a day at the dry-goods store, Letha hung up one apron and walked to Hearth and Home only to grab another one outside the kitchen and began tying it on.
Millie met her inside the kitchen. “I ran out of eggs this morning after dropping a whole crate of them. Could you go to Lydia’s home and pick up some more for me? I sent a note around earlier to let her know what I needed. They’ll be ready and waiting for you when you get there.”
“I would be happy to do that,” Letha said.
“Grab the hand wagon. There will be too many to carry.”
Letha walked the few blocks to Lydia’s house. They stacked the eggs carefully in the crates.
When they were finished, Lydia said, “Congratulations on your engagement.”
“Thank you,” Letha mumbled as she pulled the wagon away before Lydia could see the tears gathering in her eyes.
It took just enough time to retrieve and deliver the eggs to fill her afternoon until it was time for Tuesday Tea.
Letha stood across the street from the tea shop and took a deep breath. Not wanting to confront the gossip, maybe she would just skip Tuesday Tea this week. Was it really gossip? She was truly engaged for fake. Her sister and her cousins knew and of course Seffi and Millie knew. Oh, yes, they knew. Then she and Rafe had put being a couple on public display at church and at the theater.
When traffic in front of her cleared from the road, she walked across and entered.
“We saved you a seat,” called her cousin Tess, standing beside her chair.
Of course her family would support her. They always had. Although Letha had been out of society in mourning, her cousin Tess had publicly shamed her former fiancé days after his betrayal. Letha wondered if that would happen again. She giggled but knew immediately that it wasn’t Rafe’s fault. He had been close to confessing when she had stopped him. It was selfish—she had wanted to spend time with him and live a secret dream.
